Days 48-49 – 52 Books in 52 Weeks
Herman and Sherman wanted a little screen time for themselves, so I took yesterday off to let them be interviewed. So while they were making utter fools of themselves, I continued to read – fewer distractions that way.
I got through three more chapters in Mein Kampf and well… there really isn’t anything new to be said. Most of it is just reiteration of what was in Volume 1. Hitler keeps saying his program is summed up in 25 points – and I haven’t come across one of them yet. He’s too busy talking about what a great leader he is: his mastery of propaganda (page 467), his creativity with coming up with the symbol for the party (red field, white disk, black swastika), how his “storm troops” would die for him, how his speeches brought the crowds to their feet (of course they did, they lasted 2.5-3 hours… people were probably dying to stand up and stretch)… and so on.
So there really isn’t too much to blog about from these three chapters, other than on page 469 he uses the word “wiseacres” which I thought was funny until I read “phooey” on page 482 and then “bonehead” on page 488. That was kind of out of the norm for his insults. I just can’t picture him using the word “phooey”… I mean, that’s the kind of word you picture like Elmer Fudd using, not Adolph Hitler.
Oh, there was one thing he said which I liked (not in context, mind you, I just like the phrase): “…their present conceit is only arrogance, which in the form of pride, as everyone knows, always thrives on the same tree as stupidity” (page 479). I think that’s the first thing I can agree with him on. (Herman said it was pretty good for a bonehead).
Only 180 pages to go!
Happy reading!
